I approach problem solving collaboratively. I would proactively work with our neighboring cities, the county, and the state to ensure that state housing mandates are working for us. In contrast, our strategy of simply fighting back against these entities over the past few years has not worked to produce the results that our city wanted. 

While we do have a need for housing in Encinitas, in my view we do not need more luxury homes. If we will be adding housing, I believe it should be affordable housing, serving our local workforce and residents, and should be a way for the next generation to make Encinitas their home, as we did before. 

Where I live in Cardiff, people of different incomes and life stages are interwoven throughout our neighborhoods, and this is one of the things that makes our little town so unique.

We cannot tolerate another tragic fatality on our streets. We urgently need deterrents to speeding, running red lights, and distracted driving.

We also need our walking and biking infrastructure to be safe to protect all road users. This could be bulb-outs to protect pedestrians, crosswalks with more safety features, and driver education and enforcement. Keeping traffic flowing smoothly also enhances safety.

Children on bikes and e-Bikes need to understand how to use our roads safely, and the e-Bikes they are riding must be safe. And drivers also need to adjust their behavior to keep other road users safe. The city should ensure there are regular education programs to communicate this information to our residents. 

We need to preserve open space as much as we can, to maintain soil health and to keep our shade and life giving trees. As the city grows, open space also becomes more valuable and needs to be protected. It is our responsibility to protect our unique coastal sage scrub and chaparral environment.

Conventional power generation threatens open space with pollutants. Encinitans have the option of choosing 100% renewable energy with Community Power. I want to make sure all of our residents are aware of that choice and its benefits.

We also need to be prepared for what is to come with climate change. We need to regularly inspect our coastal bluffs for erosion and to ensure that our firefighters, lifeguards, and first responders are well staffed, well paid and well trained. All of this will cost money and accepting the reality of climate change will help us budget accordingly.

I am running to ensure residents in our district feel safe, heard, and supported.  We deserve future-oriented representatives who plan for our city with vision, optimism, and realism.
